1 Electric Bike FAQs
1.1 Can you ship electric bikes?
Absolutely. Within the continental U.S., we actually ship most of our e-bikes free of charge to your local bike shop. Freight times are approximately 3-5 business days to the West coast and 5-7 business days to the East coast.
1.2 Why is there such a big price swing between bikes?
For each e-bike you have the electric drive system and the 'regular' bike system/components, and in both cases not all are created equally. Certain motors and batteries, such as the Bosch, Brose and Shimano Steps systems, are premium systems and will offer benefits such as smoother riding, better/more power transfer and/or longer ranges. Similarly, more expensive bikes often come equipped with upgraded components such - i.e. hydraulic disc brakes versus mechanical v-brakes, internal shifting hub versus traditional chain derailleur, integrated front and rear lights, and more. There's no doubt about it, though - all of them are still fun!
1.3 Are electric bikes legal?
Yes! Though the classification of e-bikes varies by state, most pedal assist (as opposed to throttled) e-bikes are allowed to travel anywhere a conventional bicycle can go. For more info, and to see your specific state's laws, People for Bikes has compiled this useful guide.
1.4 How fast can you go on an electric bike?
Most e-bikes provide pedal assist up to 20mph, though there are number of pedal assist 'speed' bikes that provide assist up to 28mph. For those dare devils out there, a few brands such as Vintage Electric offer e-bikes that throttle up to 35mph.
1.5 How do you charge an electric bike?
Easy. Each bike comes with a charger that plugs into a standard outlet, and recharge times range from about 2.5-4.5 hours depending on the bike.
1.6 How far can I go on a single charge?
Battery range varies quite dramatically from bike to bike. At the low end of the range spectrum you'll see about 15-20 miles per charge; at the high end you'll see up to 100 miles per charge. Range is likely something you'll factor in when searching for the right e-bike for you, though it plays into a number of other bike characteristics as well. For example, Faraday bikes have a range of 15-20 miles per charge, but at 40 pounds they are also light enough to carry up stairs and put on most standard bike racks; alternatively, the Blix Aveny boasts up to 40 miles on a single charge though weighs in ten pounds heavier at 50 pounds.
1.7 Can I ride my electric bike in the rain?
Yes! While we wouldn't recommend leaving your bike outside in a downpour overnight or throwing it in the pool, you should feel confident riding in wet weather. Most major brands even test their bikes and offer an 'IP' rating - 'Ingress Protection' - that tells you how resistant to dust and water it is. 6 is the highest number, so an IP66 would be the highest rating.
1.8 What else should I know?
E-bikes will change your life, 100% for the better! The best part of our job is watching someone ride an e-bike for the first time and later hearing how it has revolutionized their world. Whether you are looking to keep up with friends or family, go to the grocery store or drop kids at school, spend less time in the car commuting or spend more time on the trails, e-bikes will make that happen with a smile on your face.
